Please visit us at 2PM on the third Wednesday of every month. We meet
at the Loder Building, pictured here.
Our Support Group welcomes patients as well as caregivers. People in
the Support Group genuinely understand your concerns and share insights
in coping with PD. Come here to find the support of others who are dealing
with the same disease. Anyone who thinks they are alone in the battle
against PD can become discouraged. Talking with others who have the
disease, or who are caring for a loved one with the disease, can help.
The Parkinson's Support Group is a way for people to help each other
cope with problems that they all may share. Members give and receive
information and encouragement not only at the monthly meetings, but
also by phone calls, mail and e-mail. At each monthly meeting, everyone
has the opportunity to meet and to exchange thoughts, ideas and experiences
with fellow patients and caregivers. We discuss concerns, problems,
and the latest news on research for a cure. Refreshments are served
prior to a guest speaker or a special presentation each month.
We
hope to see you soon.
What
is Parkinson's Disease?
Parkinson's
Disease (PD) belongs to a group of conditions called motor system disorders,
which are the result of the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells.
The
four primary symptoms of PD are:
-
tremor, or trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw and face;
-
rigidity, or stiffness of the limbs and trunk;
-
bradykinesia, or slowness of movement;
- postural
instability, or impaired balance and coordination
As
these symptoms become more pronounced, patients may have difficulty
walking, talking, or completing other simple tasks. PD usually affects
people over the age of fifty.
